It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

victorian-people-eatingBest of times

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. No, I take that back. It was just the best of times – at the Cape May Dickens Christmas Extravaganza. If you like a little culture with your Victorian vacation, consider coming to the Dickens Extravaganza, December 6, 7, and 8th. Dr. Elliot Engle has had a mini-series on PBS, and is a wonderful, entertaining speaker. Sunday evening, there will be a talk about Edgar Allan Poe and Dickens. Monday is a talk about Winston Churchill and another about the Bronte sisters.

Best of timesTuesday, Jay Friedlin of the Philadelphia Dickens Fellowship will lead a discussion about Nicholas Nickelby. Later, there’s a talk about Railways in the Victorian age. The afternoon and evening are filled with a fascinating talk about Dickens and the Jews, followed by a Dickens Feast at the spectacular Washington Inn.

Come stay with us at Leith Hall bed and breakfast for the full Extravaganza package.  $435 Is the cost for  the three night package for one person and a room and breakfast at Leith Hall.   $631 is for a room, breakfast, and two participants in the full package. Give us a call for discounts on partial Dickens packages.

Christmas Cheesecake – and it’s sugar-free!

Sugar-free Christmas Cheesecake

Ami, in my real estate office (Coastline Realty) was just asked to bring a sugar-free dessert to a Christmas party. I suggested cheesecake, since it doesn’t depend on sugar for its appeal (it depends on butterfat) nor for its texture. This is a pretty standard New York style cheesecake – since I’m one of the few New Yorkers in Cape May – except that it has a Pasta Frolla crust.  I’ve just discovered Monkfruit sweetner as an alternative to sugar. It doesn’t have the spinach-y taste of Stevia. We can buy it locally as Monkfruit in the Raw.

CRUST

1 ½ cups flourcheesecake

1 stick unsalted butter

½ teaspoon salt

1 egg, beaten

½ tsp orange or lemon extract.

Chip the butter into the flour. Add the salt, egg and extract. Knead together to make a dough. Roll or press out the dough to line a 9” springform pan.

Alternatively, buy a pre-made frozen pie crust and thaw, then press into a 9” springform pan.

FILLING

4  8oz. packages of cream cheese

1 cup Monkfruit in the Raw sweetenercheesecake

¾ cup milk

4 eggs

1 cup sour cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract or vanilla paste

1 teaspoon orange extract

1 teaspoon lemon extract

Beat cream cheese in a mixer bowl. Add eggs, one at a time and beat in. Add all of the other ingredients. Pour into the crust and bake for 1 hour at 350 F. Leave in the turned off oven for hours afterward, then refrigerate.

Of course, if you’d prefer augured version, just substitute sugar for the Monkfruit. In other Cape May news, there’s only one more chance for a Christmas Candlelight Tour this year. December 27th is the date. Come and stay with us at Leith Hall bed and breakfast.

Christmas in Cape May – Victoriana Run Riot

Cape May b&b

Cape May b&bChristmas in Cape May – Victoriana Run Riot

Christmas in Cape May?  Yup, this is no ordinary beach town, it’s decorated and bubbling with activities for the holiday season. The beginning is this weekend with the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts’ Holiday Preview Weekend. Saturday, the Physick Estate will be an open house with free tours, hot cider and cookies. During the evening, Santa will arrive on the grounds and take up his position in a beautiful Victorian sleigh to hear all the kids’ Christmas gift lists. The Caroll Gallery in the carriage house will  house “An Old Fashioned Christmas” display with model trains, toys and a giant Christmas tree.

This weekend will  also begin three holiday-theme trolley rides; Santa’s Trolley Ride, the Ghost of Christmas Past, and the Holiday Lights Christmas tours.

Cape May b&bThe big events for this and every Christmas season in Cape May are the Christmas Candlelight tours. Saturday Dec. 7th, 13th and 27th , from 5:30 to 8:30, you’ll be able to tour aver a dozen historic houses all decked out for Christmas.  Homeowners try to outdo each other with elaborate Christmas decorations laid over already elaborate Victorian interiors. In Cape May, our motto is “More is More.”  Call MAC (609) 884-5404, or go online to reserve and buy tickets.

Of course, you should come stay with us at Leith Hall, Cape May b&b, where our halls are decked and our trees decorated.Cape May b&b

Old Fashioned Christmas Came to Live in Cape May

old fashioned ChristmasThis December, come to Cape May, where real old fashioned Christmas came to live. There are two major house tours offered by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts; the Christmas Candlelight Tour and the Lamplighter Tour. The Candlelight tour is the biggest of the year, with about a dozen houses each night. There’s still a date available – Saturday, December 28old fashioned Christmas. Homeowners and Inn owners will greet you and show you their Victorian parlors, all decked out for the holidays. The carriage house at the Physick Estate will have hot cider and the town will be sparkling with lights.

Lamplighter Tour

A smaller, more intimate, tour of five houses and inns will be offered Friday December 27th , Monday December 30th, and Tuesday December 31st. My preference is the Lamplighter Tour. Five Victorian houses per day is near my limit. You can chose by what is offered on the evenings that you’d like to be in Cape May. old fashioned ChristmasCome stay with us at Leith Hall and enjoy Elan’s breakfasts and afternoon teas as well as Cape May’s shopping, touring, and dining.

Holidays in Cape May – Come Visit!

Who would spend the holidays in Cape May? A beach town in the winter? Yes,218_CHRISTMAS_5 indeed. Cape May is hopping with Christmas activities. The Physick Estate has a special tour – The Physick Family Christmas. Several interpreters play the roles of Dr. Physick, his mother and his aunt – and emphasize what a lecherous (that is, fun-loving) old fellow he was. What’s amazing is that they are convincing as the prissy mother, the man-about-town son, and the suffragette aunt, and they always get the history right too.

December 14 and 28, there will be two of the biggest house-tours of the year – The Christmas Candlelight Tours. Over a dozen houses are listed on each tour and they guarantee that your head will be swimming with wallpapers, antiques and decorations.

179_CHRISTMAS_EXHIBIT_4The Lamplighter Tour shows you about five inns at a time (a much easier to digest number)  and is available on December 13, 20, 27, 30 and 31. Come stay with us at the very decorated Leith Hall bed and breakfast and enjoy the holiday season the old-fashioned way.
