You already know that Cape May is a great town for dining out, but this week, it’s even better.
It’s Cape May Restaurant Week June 2 through 9, and you can get three course prix fixe meals at some of Cape May’s best restaurants for $35 . These are outstanding places like the Cajun, Creole and Caribbean 410 Bank Street – where $35 is a small part of their regular price. Or you can dine at the delicious Merion Inn, which is one of my favorites.
Think of dining at Union Park. It’s one of Cape May’s most elegant places – with a wide variety of seafood as well as short ribs and steak. I remember once dining at Union Park and all the plates arrived under silver domes, and were revealed at once. I’m a sucker for that kind of presentation.
Another great choice is Tisha’s on the Washington Street Mall. They have a broad menu of seafood, steaks, and chicken, and they really know how to cook.
More good news! Leith Hall has a Restaurant Week Special to encourage you to visit, and we look forward to seeing you again.
Suddenly it’s summer in Cape May! Our guests are lounging on the beach. There’s music everywhere and all of the restaurants are in full swing.
We are still celebrating the Cape May Music festival, and two upcoming concerts are the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players on Tuesday June 12, playing two pieces by Bach, a Mozart quartet, as well as two others.
The concert will be in the Episcopal Church of the Advent, which is one of Cape May’s most beautiful interiors and acoustically wonderful.
Summer in Cape May
June 14 will feature another concert in the Church of the Advent. The New York Chamber Ensemble will perform a concert called “The Italian Influence” oddly including three Germans and one Italian. All of music was influenced by Italy and includes Bach, Handel, and Telemann. The finale is by Antonio Vivaldi – one of my favorites.
Our third musical offering is completely different. The Cape May Hops Fest (Saturday, June 23) will include blues, beer and barbecue. The blues will be performed by the Corndog Blues Band, the James Supra/Sarah Ayers Band, and Bluebone. This is one of our most popular events of the year in Cape May and includes kids’ activities, and a crafts and collectible show. It’s a great day for the whole family.
Anytime you visit Cape May, there is plenty of music and good food to try. At least a dozen places in town offer music in the evenings and there are great restaurants at every price. It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. No, I take that back. It was just the best of times – at the Cape May Dickens Christmas Extravaganza. If you like a little culture with your Victorian vacation, consider coming to the Dickens Extravaganza, December 6, 7, and 8th. Dr. Elliot Engle has had a mini-series on PBS, and is a wonderful, entertaining speaker. Sunday evening, there will be a talk about Edgar Allan Poe and Dickens. Monday is a talk about Winston Churchill and another about the Bronte sisters.
Tuesday, Jay Friedlin of the Philadelphia Dickens Fellowship will lead a discussion about Nicholas Nickelby. Later, there’s a talk about Railways in the Victorian age. The afternoon and evening are filled with a fascinating talk about Dickens and the Jews, followed by a Dickens Feast at the spectacular Washington Inn.
Come stay with us at Leith Hall bed and breakfast for the full Extravaganza package. $435 Is the cost for the three night package for one person and a room and breakfast at Leith Hall. $631 is for a room, breakfast, and two participants in the full package. Give us a call for discounts on partial Dickens packages.
LEITH HALL’S GREAT MIDWEEK SPECIAL 30% off the second night, now through mid-June
Midweek Special. Not only are there wonderful things to do in Cape May for the next month, but now it’s cheaper! We are offering 30% off your second night during the midweek. Remember, for us the weekend is Friday and Saturday night and the midweek is Sunday through Thursday night.
From May 24 through June 11 is the Cape May Music Festival, with Irish music, The Atlantic Brass Band, and a tribute to our own George Mesterhazy – featuring many musicians playing favorites from “The American Songbook.”
May 31 through June 7 is Restaurant Week in Cape May, with a host of food-related activities. There’s a progressive dinner, with each course in a different restaurant. There are contests among the chefs and waiters, a many special events with classes and demonstrations by the star chefs of Cape May. When you add Cape May’s wine and craft beer to the mix, it’ll be a fantastic experience.
Cape May’s annual Spring Festival is next week – and this year there are lots of spectacular activities. There will be the Spring Festival Crafts and Collectibles show, as well as several tours like Cape May After Dark, Chocolate Tasting Tour, and Historic Haunts Combo Tour.
The Self-guided Winery and Brewery Tour and the Hawk Haven Vineyard and Winery Tour, and the Winery Cellar Tour and Tasting may all sound like the same thing, but are really three very distinct experiences – at different wineries and with different presentations. You can link to the Mid-Atlantic Center’s website to get details and sign up for activities.
My favorite part of this year’s Spring Festival is an exhibit of paintings by Alice Steer Wilson, who was a great painter who lived in Cape May. Her watercolors were extraordinary and in the same league as Winslow Homer’s or John Singer Sargent’s.
Oh No, not again! Another murder in Victorian Cape May! Don’t worry – Sherlock Holmes is on the case.
This November 7th through 9th , there will be another adventure, another murder, another mystery. Friday night, there will be a dessert reception at The Inn of Cape May. Someone will die. Sherlock and Dr. Watson will begin their work. On Saturday, you can tour Cape May bed and breakfasts and search for clues to the mystery. Saturday afternoon, 3:30 to 4:30 , the mystery will unfold further at the Rose Room in the Inn of Cape May.
Sunday lunch at the Inn of Cape May will precede the solution of the mystery. The best, the worst, the best dressed, etc. will all get prizes. Come stay with us at Leith Hall and buy the entire package through MAC (the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts) or just the parts that interest you most.
Just when you thought the Cape May season was winding down, the middle of September brings the Cape May Food and Wine Celebration. There will be spectacular dinners like the Farm to Table dinner presented by the Red Store in Cape May Point and a Bourbon Tasting Dinner at Alethea’s Restaurant in the Inn of Cape May on the beach in Cape May. The Chocolate Lovers Feast will be at The Blue Rose, one of Cape May’s newest and best restaurants. There will also be special dinners, tours, and grape picking at three of Cape Mays vineyards – Hawk Haven, Natali, and Cape May Winery.
Just imagine your stay in Cape May. The ocean will still be warm, the weather will still be ideal. There will be lectures and demonstrations, tastings from many Cape May restaurants at Convention Hall; winery, brewery, and bourbon events, samples and tastings, and feasting galore. You can go to the website of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts for a more complete list; and you can call or email us to make reservations.
This December, come to Cape May, where real old fashioned Christmas came to live. There are two major house tours offered by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts; the Christmas Candlelight Tour and the Lamplighter Tour. The Candlelight tour is the biggest of the year, with about a dozen houses each night. There’s still a date available – Saturday, December 28. Homeowners and Inn owners will greet you and show you their Victorian parlors, all decked out for the holidays. The carriage house at the Physick Estate will have hot cider and the town will be sparkling with lights.
A smaller, more intimate, tour of five houses and inns will be offered Friday December 27th , Monday December 30th, and Tuesday December 31st. My preference is the Lamplighter Tour. Five Victorian houses per day is near my limit. You can chose by what is offered on the evenings that you’d like to be in Cape May. Come stay with us at Leith Hall and enjoy Elan’s breakfasts and afternoon teas as well as Cape May’s shopping, touring, and dining.
Whether you’re a die-hard Sherlock fanatic or a casual murder mystery dinner fan, you’ll love Sherlock Holmes Weekend in Cape May. The weekend begins with a coffee and dessert reception where the plot begins. Saturday afternoon, you tour a group of Cape May’s Victorian homes, searching for clues to unravel the mystery. After the search for clues, you reconvene at the Inn of Cape May and find out how you are doing compared to Sherlock and to your fellow detectives. Sunday afternoon – all is revealed.
First Mystery – then Jazz!
For something completely different, the Exit Zero International Jazz Festival will feature jazz stars that are so great, that it’s a miracle that we can get them in Cape May. Eddie Palmieri and his Latin Jazz Band is legendary and Dianne Reeves is often described as the premiere jazz vocalist in the world. Give us a call at Leith Hall or book online for a wonderful weekend in Cape May.
CAPE MAY MUSIC FESTIVAL SPECIAL – FREE TICKETS FROM LEITH HALL
Cape May Music Festival + Leith Hall bed and breakfast
Thursday, June 6, Leith Hall will be co-sponsoring the concert by the Bay Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. They will be presenting some of my very best favorite music. A concerto by Vivaldi – There’s nothing better than Vivaldi; and a concerto for guitar by Heitor Villa-Lobos .
The Bay Atlantic Symphony Orchestra concert will be conducted by Jed Gaylin, and he always explains what the orchestra is about to play, giving you more understanding and insight into the work.
Some classical work that you’ve heard before is suddenly new and fresh and you come away with more appreciation and enjoyment than you ever had before. It even works for difficult music, though this concert will be all very easy to listen to.
The Gaylin family often stays with us at Leith Hall and it is always a joy to see them again.
There’s a concert every few days for the next few weeks. Celtic, country, chamber music, and classical orchestral music; there’s sure to be something you’ll love. Give us a call or go on-line to make a reservation. Check our Packages and Specials tab for our Music Festival Special – stay with us any night that there is a concert, and we’ll give you two free tickets! (a $40m – $50 value)
