Cape May City is STOKED for the Second Annual Cape May Dragon Boat Festival on September 28th! Picture teams of dragon boats exploding through the water in Cape May Harbor, a line of 54 lion dancers, stilt walkers, bands playing, great food and shopping!
While you are here, check out the play at Cape May Stage – Freud’s Last Session – which has been drawing sellout crowds in New York.
Plan to stay at Leith Hall for the weekend. Cape May is full of excellent restaurants, shopping and attractions. Book your stay at Leith Hall for the weekend of September 28th & come enjoy the Dragon Boat Festival. Paddles up!
The show is An Evening of Cole Porter: Anything Goes. The date is Monday July 22 and the price is fifty dollars. Now Cape May Stage can take its place alongside the Kennedy Center in Washington and the Algonquin in New York in hosting Karen Akers. She is the best and most famous cabaret singer in America and will feature some of my favorite Cole Porter songs like I Get a Kick Out of You. (Who else would rhyme “Flying too high with some guy in the sky…” that’s four rhymes in nine words) Some of the songs will be melodramatic tear-jerkers like I love Paris, but many others will be the sarcastic, smart alecky Cole Porter lyrics I love like I’m Always True to you Darling (in my fashion) Look at – “If a custom tailored vet, Asks me out for something wet. When the vet begins to pet, I cry Hooray” Nobody wrote cheeky lyrics like Cole Porter.
Come visit us at Leith Hall for the weekend before the concert or for the midweek afterward. We look forward to seeing you.
Travel and Leisure just identified Cape May as one of the best small resorts in the country. We’ve known that for years, but it’s nice to see it confirmed by a national magazine. They point out the Victorian Bed and Breakfasts and the many great restaurants as high points of a visit to Cape May. For me, it’s also that Cape May is never overcrowded. Because we don’t have any tall buildings, even when the town is full, it’s just bustling, not crowded.
The article mentioned the high-end fine-dining choices in Cape May, but we also have a host of medium price and inexpensive restaurants with wonderful food and charming settings. Call us (609) 884-1934 or go online to make a reservation today. Come to Cape May to unwind and eat well.
Is it the wine or is it the yoga? Why do I feel so relaxed, so centered, so calm? It’s both. You may remember from earlier blog posts that Cape May offers many choices for yoga. On the beach in the morning, on the lawn at Congress Hall, at The Well wellness center, in gyms and spas all over town. Now there’s a new place in a particularly beautiful setting. Hawk Haven winery is offering yoga out by the vines, followed by wine and cheese sipping and nibbling in the tasting room.
On Sundays they offer wine and sangria by the glass, live music and food – bring your (or our) sand chairs and chill on the grounds. Call us today at Leith Hall or go online to make a reservation for a relaxing weekend in Cape May.
CAPE MAY MUSIC FESTIVAL SPECIAL – FREE TICKETS FROM LEITH HALL
Cape May Music Festival + Leith Hall bed and breakfast
Thursday, June 6, Leith Hall will be co-sponsoring the concert by the Bay Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. They will be presenting some of my very best favorite music. A concerto by Vivaldi – There’s nothing better than Vivaldi; and a concerto for guitar by Heitor Villa-Lobos .
The Bay Atlantic Symphony Orchestra concert will be conducted by Jed Gaylin, and he always explains what the orchestra is about to play, giving you more understanding and insight into the work.
Some classical work that you’ve heard before is suddenly new and fresh and you come away with more appreciation and enjoyment than you ever had before. It even works for difficult music, though this concert will be all very easy to listen to.
The Gaylin family often stays with us at Leith Hall and it is always a joy to see them again.
There’s a concert every few days for the next few weeks. Celtic, country, chamber music, and classical orchestral music; there’s sure to be something you’ll love. Give us a call or go on-line to make a reservation. Check our Packages and Specials tab for our Music Festival Special – stay with us any night that there is a concert, and we’ll give you two free tickets! (a $40m – $50 value)
We don’t usually let everyone know every time we buy some new furniture at Leith Hall,
but this time we’re very excited to have replaced two sofas. It all started when a guest noted that the wicker setee in the Audubon Suite was not as comfortable as he’d like. So we started a search for a new setee that was Victorian-ish. We found one that has Victorian front legs and is upholstered in a William Morris designed, 1880s pattern, fabric. The new setee is in place and quite comfy.
While we were shopping for that one, we came across a Colonial Revival style, 1890s looking setee that fits on the sitting room wall in the Turkish Suite. So we had to buy it. It is tall enough to snuggle in and rest your head. Just above the new setee is a painting of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain – pretending to be Turkey. The man in the painting who appears to be praying is our Moroccan guide, Rashid, who was actually checking his digital camera battery. His friends had dressed him up in a burnoose, so he looked exotic, though he was a completely modern guy. Come visit us at Leith Hall and try out the new comfy furniture.
This Saturday, May 11th, the thirtieth annual World Series of Birding will begin right here in Cape May. There will be youth and senior teams as well as the cutthroat competition among the thousands of participants, who raise over six hundred thousand dollars for conservation each year. The event is organized by NJ Audubon Society and will begin at midnight on May 11th and end at midnight May 14th
The World Series of Birding really is worldwide
You may know that Cape May is one of the ten top birding sites in the world. We’ve had guests at Leith Hall from as far as China, Kenya, and Germany for birding both spring and fall. Guided walks and classes start at either the Northwood Center on Lily Lake in Cape May Point, or at the Research and Education center on Route 47 in Cape May Court House.
Give us a call or go online to make reservations for this spring, either to be here for the World Series of Birding, or to take a beautiful and calm guided walk and learn the basics of birding.
After your peaceful night and relaxing breakfast at Leith Hall bed and breakfast, prepare for mayhem at lunch or dinner. Do you love Downton Abbey? Wish you could live in one of the stately homes of England and hob-nob with the nobs? Come to Cape May for an afternoon tea presented by the Friends of the Physick Estate called Upton Abbey. There will be prizes for the best British accent, and for the best period costume. Downton Abbey Trivia will test your knowledge of the shows details.
While you’re in town you can immerse yourself in the period with trolley tours of out twelve hundred Victorian and Edwardian houses, tours of the Emlen Physick Estate (the richest guy in town in those days), and stay at Leith Hall with our period rooms and furnishings.
The Upton Abbey tea will be Friday, April 19th at 3 P.M. at the Physick Estate Carriage House Café and Tearoom. If you miss this time, keep in touch – it will be offered again.
This year’s Victorian Fair will feature The Stupefying Sandy, so feminine, so comely, yet with a full beard! Also, Tom Coyle, the strongest man in the Emerald Isle will amaze the audience with his feats of muscle. A juggler, stilt walker and a midway of Victorian games of skill and chance will continue the thrills. The grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate will also host a crafts fair with a variety of skilled artisans. There will be ponies to paint (apparently the ponies don’t mind the indignity.) Food, white elephant tables, wild (or very tame) animals will top off the day.
On the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate 1048 Washington Street, only a few blocks from the mall. Parking available. Call us to make a reservation for this fun event coming up June 9 and 10
