“God made beer because he loves us and wants us to be happy.” not a quote from Benjamin Franklin

Gusto Brewery with owners

flight of beer at CM Brewing CompanyI don’t claim to know much (or anything) about beer, but my niece and her fiance, Emma and Max, do, and they introduced me to Cape May Brewing Company. Suddenly, Cape May County is full of breweries. Some are reasonably big – like Cape May Brewing Company.  Some are tiny, like 7 Mile Brewery. What many have in common it that they are run by enthusiastic young people and have a great atmosphere to hang out in – even if you are  not a beer person.

Cape May Brewing Company is located in the airport about three miles north of Cape May. It has a great feeling and really nice employees. I’ve tasted manyCape May Brewing Company interior of their flavors of beer and am told that they are very good. There is also a taco place next door which is run by the owners of The Red Store (a high-end restaurant in Cape May Point) and you can get Mexican treats to go and bring them into the brewery. There’s a large outdoor patio where you can eat, drink, and hang out. Another nearby attraction in the airport is Naval Air Station Wildwood, a WWII aviation museum hosed in a wonderful old hangar.  Both the building and the museum are wonderful.

Cold Spring Brewery is located in a rebuilt c.1900 barn on the grounds of Historic Cold Spring Village, about three miles north of Cape May. Here, the attraction is the craft beer, of course, but also the many local bands, the building, and the rest of Cold Spring Village. They also provide for your dog, so you can bring Fido or Rover along.

More breweries

Gusto Brewery with ownersGusto Brewing‘s motto is “Keep it small, keep it weird.” It’s located on Bayshore Road in North Cape May. It was founded by two guys (and a gal) from local families who are full of enthusiasm and optimism. The interior is bright and inviting and its tiny size makes you feel at home and part of the family. They also get high marks for their beer.

Bucket Brigade is a little brewery on Main Street (route 9) in Cape May CourtBucket Brigade brewery House, about eight miles North of Cape May. It was opened by two Philadelphia firemen, and features lots of firehouse theme stuff. It is right in the middle of town, near the courthouse, the hospital, and shopping centers. People talk about how nice the staff is, how fun the interior, and how pleasant the atmosphere.

Make your reservations at Leith Hall bed and breakfast today and tour these and many other breweries soon.

Summer in Cape May

Suddenly it’s summer in Cape May! Our guests are lounging on the beach. There’s music everywhere and all of the restaurants are in full swing.

We are still celebrating the Cape May Music festival, and two upcoming Summer in Cape Mayconcerts are the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players on Tuesday June 12, playing two pieces by Bach, a Mozart quartet, as well as two others.

The concert will be in the Episcopal Church of the Advent, which is one of Cape May’s most beautiful interiors and acoustically wonderful.

Summer in Cape May

Summer in Cape MayJune 14 will feature another concert in the Church of the Advent. The New York Chamber Ensemble will perform a concert called “The Italian Influence” oddly including three Germans and one Italian. All of music was influenced by Italy and includes Bach, Handel, and Telemann. The finale is by Antonio Vivaldi – one of my favorites.

Summer in Cape MayOur third musical offering is completely different. The Cape May Hops Fest (Saturday, June 23) will include blues, beer and barbecue. The blues will be performed by the Corndog Blues Band, the James Supra/Sarah Ayers Band, and Bluebone. This is one of our most popular events of the year in Cape May and includes kids’ activities, and a crafts and collectible show. It’s a great day for the whole family.

Anytime you visit Cape May, there is plenty of music and good food to try. At least a dozen places in town offer music in the evenings and there are great restaurants at every price. Call us now (609 884-1934) for your reservations at Leith Hall – your Cape May bed and breakfast – or go on line (www.leithhall.com) . Music Festival in Cape May

Cape May bed and breakfast

Music Festival

There are many different concerts that are part of the Cape May Music Festival; classical, popular, folk, and jazz. I’m going to describe just one Music Festivalof them. Tuesday, May 29, the New York Chamber Ensemble will be performing at the Church of the Advent. Their concert will include a fandango by Boccherini. He was an Italian who lived and worked at the royal court in Madrid – we used a piece of his for the recessional for our wedding. The concert will also include Bela Bartok’s Roumanian Dances, (My father was Bessarabian – so Roumanian Dances are very familiar.) as well as Dvorak’s “American” string quartet. Everything in this concert is fun and lively. I don’t know lot about classical music and I find this kind very entertaining. Imagine your day in Cape May including dinner at one of the many spectacular restaurants, a stint at the beach, and this wonderful concert.

Music FestivalThis is the most melodic and easy to listen to classical music ever written. If you hear it, you’ll love it. Come to Leith Hall for a visit and enjoy some of what Cape May has to offer.

Conde Nast Traveller names Cape May most beautiful spot in NJ

Cape May Bed and Breakfast

Cape MayConde Nast Traveler names Cape May as New Jersey’s most beautiful site. We already knew that, of course, but it’s nice to see it in the national press. Cape May has been named the best Beach on the Jersey Shore. An article by Joe Atmonavage quotes on NJ.com  “As the farthest point south on the Shore, Cape May is the crown jewel of the region with gorgeous beaches and a quaint town center filled with gingerbread Victorians and colorful red and breakfasts.” the Travel Chanel post read. “Bring your binoculars to the beach to spy the playful dolphins jumping in the wake.”

Come to Cape May for Fireworks on the Fourth

Fourth of July

Fireworks for the Fourth of JulyFourth of July

Cape May is the place to come for the most old fashioned Independence Day you can imagine. First, the Independence Day celebrations begin on Saturday, July 1st with the Independence Day parade down Beach Avenue starting at 1 P.M. You can walk just a few yards from the Leith Hall porch to have a curbside view. Later, you can visit one of the many spectacular restaurants for dinner, take a trolley tour, climb the lighthouse, shop at West End Garage or the West Cape May Artist’s Coop.

Fourth of JulyOn July Third, Lower Township has their fireworks show and fair on the bay-front. The fair starts at 5 P.M. (between Lincoln and Emerson Streets, near the Ferry Terminal) , and the fireworks start at 9 P.M.. We drive up to North Cape May or the Villas with our sand chairs and find a good spot to park.

Finally, on July Fourth, starting at 9.P.M., walk the half-block down to the beach for the annual fireworks co-sponsored by Congress Hall and the City of Cape May. If you like, you can walk right for a couple of blocks to hear the band on the Congress Hall lawn.

Think about a Cape May bed and breakfast getaway this summer and give us a call. We look forward to seeing you again.Fourth of July

New Businesses in Cape May!

Fourth of July

new buisnesses in Cape May

There are several new businesses in Cape May, that means new shopping and dining adventures!  Though you won’t need it when staying at Leith Hall, as breakfast is supplied by Elan, there’s a new breakfast place near the Acme called Egg and Dart. If you’ve ever shopped at Galvanic, Cape May’s own little bit of Williamsburgh, Brooklyn, you’ll be happy to know that there will be a second location at 208 Ocean Street for the summer. So, if you’re young, cool, and slim, you know where to go. (I’m none of those things, so I don’t fit in the clothes.) Their first store is mostly black, so this one is mostly white. Very nice.

On Carpenter’s Lane (the parking street just before the Washington Street Mall) the Italian bath shop has been replaced with Quirk & Co, which is a gift new businesses in Cape Mayshop specializing in items made within one hundred miles of Cape May. At the far end of the Mall, across from the Victorian Motel and Congress Hall, the popcorn shop has been replaced by new home of Victorious. You may know Victorious as the home of wonderful and interesting accessories and jewelry. They always have the most stylish and carefully chosen things, and I’m sure they will continue that great tradition in the new location.  Speaking of jewelry, The new estate jewelry store that replaced Artisan’s Alcove at Ocean Street and Lafayette has a second location in Congress Hall. They are both called Queen May estate jewelry.

Most important, there’s a new bakery in town! On Beach Avenue, in the old movie house, is Madison’s Bakery – just right for coffee and a nosh during a hard day of lying in the sun.
