Thirsty?

Thirsty? You’ve come to the right place.

Thirsty? glass of white wineA weird and wonderful phenomenon has spread across Cape May County over the last few years. It began with wineries, which are part of New Jersey’s efforts to encourage agriculture in The Garden State. Cape May Winery started the movement. It’s owned by the Craig family which also owns the wonderful Washington Inn, Lucky Bones, and Love the Cook; so they know about food and drink. Located on Townbank Road in North Cape May, they have a charming building and a great tour.

Willow Creek Winery in West Cape May is also nearby. It is the prettiest winery around. It features flowerbeds, beautiful grounds, and a very impressive building. You can also eat and drink outside and they frequently host craft shows and other events. While you are there, you can also visit Beach Plum Farm – an organic farm, next door.

Cape may has become the place for the thirsty vacationer to drink.

Hawk Haven Vineyard and Winery on Seashore road is one of my Thirsty? glass of red winefavorites. Among other things, they grow Tempranillo grapes, which is what Rioja is made of in Spain. Tempranillo is dry red wine but isn’t very tannic, so your mouth won’t pucker and shrivel when the wine is young. Hawk Haven is also very informal and fun, with entertainment and food on the crushpad every weekend.

My favorite wine comes from Turdo Vinyards, which is just on the Turdo Vineyards signNorth side of the Cape May Canal. It is a small, house-size, winery and makes wine from Nebbiolo (think Barolo) grapes, from Nero d’Avola (the grape of Sicily), as well as others. Their wine is very good and brings back memories of trips to Italy.

Natali Vineyard and Jessie Creek; are both on Route 47 in Cape May Court House. I’ve been told by my guests that Cape May is called the Napa of New Jersey – and these two wineries offer wines for every taste. Whether you want sweet or dry, easy or tough, light or heavy, you can find a wine to love.

Call today for your reservation at Leith Hall bed and breakfast and enjoy all that Cape May has to offer.

Cape May’s annual Spring Festival

Spring Festival

Cape May’s annual Spring Festival is next week – and this year there are lots of spectacular activities. There will be the Spring Festival Crafts and Collectibles show, as well as several tours like Cape May After Dark, Chocolate Tasting Tour, and Historic Haunts Combo Tour.

The Self-guided Winery and Brewery Tour and the Hawk Haven Vineyard and Winery Tour, and the Winery Cellar Tour and Tasting may all sound like the same thing, but are really three very distinct experiences – at different wineries and with different presentations. You can link to the Mid-Atlantic Center’s website to get details and sign up for activities.

My favorite part of this year’s Spring Festival is an exhibit of paintings by Alice Steer Wilson, who was a great painter who lived in Cape May. Her watercolors were extraordinary and in the same league as Winslow Homer’s or John Singer Sargent’s.

Come visit us at Leith Hall and take advantage of the dozens of things to do on a Spring afternoon in Cape May.
